360-degree images reveal inside Zaha Hadid Architects’ Beijing Daxing International Airport

Chinese television channel CGTN has released 360-degree photography that shows the interiors of Zaha Hadid Architects‘ airport terminal building in Beijing, which is set to open next month.

The images allow people to virtually explore the terminal building at the Beijing Daxing International Airport in China.

They feature alongside visualisations and infographics in an interactive article on CGTN’s website, which previews the recently completed building.

At 700,000 square-metres, the airport terminal building will become one of the largest in the world when it opens on 30 September 2019.

It has been designed to handle up to 45 million passengers a year, with plans to increase its capacity to 72 million passengers by 2025.

The building features a six-pier radial design, which is arranged around a large space in the centre that “evolved from principles within tradition Chinese architecture that organise interconnected spaces around a central courtyard,” according to Zaha Hadid Architects.

This arrangement is designed to minimise the distances passengers have to travel when checking in or transferring flights at the extremely large airport.

The public areas of the building revealed in the images feature dark, polished-stone floors and white undulating ceilings that open up at regular intervals to create huge skylights.

Zaha Hadid Architects worked on the project with airport specialists ADPI, which won the bid to design the new Beijing airport in 2011.

Beijing Daxing International Airport is located on the opposite side of the city from Beijing’s existing Capital International Airport, which was completed in 2008 by Foster + Partners.

The project will be Zaha Hadid Architects’ first completed airport. The firm was shortlisted for Mexico City’s new airport, but lost out to a team of Foster + Partners and Fernando Romero.

However, it will not be the last airport designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The studio won a competition to design Mumbai’s new international airport last year.

Photography is by CGTN. The 360-degree versions of the images can be viewed on CGTN’s website, which also features a mobile-friendly version of the interactive article.
