Most would agree that Batman has one of the best superhero costumes ever designed. It’s sleek, simple and yet very striking. But even that winning design hasn’t stopped artists and costume designers from making many tweaks over the years. One need only compare the classic Batman of the Golden Age DC comics to Christian Bale’s armored Caped Crusader to the version seen in The LEGO Batman Movie to know that there are a lot of ways to interpret this iconic hero.

With that in mind, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the many visual forms Batman has taken over the decades. From comics to animation to film to video games, these are the most memorable and significant Batman incarnations of all time…

Batman looks set to add even more new outfits to his wardrobe in 2018. Doomsday Clock #3 just gave readers an early glimpse of Batman’s new comic book look. And thanks to the release of the Batman: Gotham by Gaslight movie, fans got a taste of how Mike Mignola’s steampunk Batman looks in animated form.
