When one thinks of Black Friday—the shopping frenzy that follows the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States—what tends to come to mind are images of long lines outside malls and advertisements for deep discounts at select superstores. But art institutions are involved in the action, as well. Below, ARTnews has compiled a list of museum and gallery shops offering sales today (and, in some cases, through the weekend or longer), on everything from art books to design objects to seidenstrümpfe.
– The Metropolitan Museum of Art is offering 25 percent off everything—from clothing to books to stationary and holiday ornaments—with the code BLACK19. With the discount code BSHIP19, online shoppers can also get free shipping of their orders. This deal continues through December 1.
– The Neue Galerie in New York, an institution dedicated to 20th-century German and Austrian art, has two Black Friday specials: with the purchase of the wiener carré kimono, designed by Han Feng, you will receive a complimentary copy of Taschen’s 240-page hardcover monograph Wiener Werkstätte, and, with every pair of seidenstrümpfe—which are available in colors like licorice, amethyst, and raspberry—you will get a free 2020 Gustav Klimt calendar. Both offers extend through December 1.
– New York’s Museum of Arts and Design, which stocks one-of-a-kind jewelry and home and kitchen wares in its store, is providing members, and anyone who becomes a member, with 20 percent off their purchases through December 31.
– And the Getty Center in Los Angeles is doing an online-only 25 percent site-wide discount, which began on November 23 and lasts through December 3. The museum is also offering free domestic standard shipping on purchases over $100 until December 31.
Galleries are participating, too. Starting on November 30, visitors to Green Naftali‘s holiday pop-up shop at Badlands Unlimited (located at 24 Rutgers Street) in New York will get up to 75 percent off select books, original artworks, and editions. And Gagosian is offering a free copy of its quarterly magazine with purchases over $50 in-store and online until December 2; plus, shoppers who spend more than $200 will get a free subscription to the publication.
At Hauser & Wirth‘s sprawling downtown Los Angeles location, the Artbook shop will offer 20 percent off its vast selection of titles—excluding rare and signed books—to celebrate Small Business Saturday on November 30.
