Bungie revealed new changes to its combat system for Year 2 of Destiny 2 in a live stream Tuesday, hosted by Communications Director at Bungie, David Dague.
Dague was joined by Sandbox Design Lead Josh Hamrick and Senior Sandbox Designers Claude Jerome and Greg Peng.
The main focus for the new changes in Year 2 is to let players customize their own gameplay. To do this, Bungie added in weapon balance and tuning, new mods, and the addition of nine new super abilities along with associated perks for them.
“We looked at year one and saw what people were saying and how the game is being played,” Hamrick said. “We wanted to give players more options to specifically tweak and tune their loadout on how they wanted to play.”
Bungie said they had to build a new ammo system regardless due to player feedback, but they wanted to make sure their delivery on the new system was balanced so that people with special’s weren’t overtaking everyone.
They built the new system by including a new attribute that is attached to each weapon – an ammo type. Each weapon slot will have its usual Kinetic, Energy, and Power types, but new ammo types will be added in the form of Primary, Special, and Heavy options. Each ammo type will assist different weapons for different styles of gameplay.
“The last huge thing is we wanted to bring back even more hero moments,” Hamrick said. “Doing that specifically through increased skill gap. We wanted to make the game in the right hands be special and insane to watch.”
Customization options for weapons have also been changed, along with melee attack increases, and super abilities that were underperforming get a bump up to be more balanced among other abilities.
“We want to let you play in the way that you want to play,” Peng said.
All players of Destiny 2 will see the changes, regardless if they decide to purchase Forsaken. Some of the updates revealed in the live stream will be available in the Aug. 28 update, but many of them will not roll out until Year 2 begins on Sept. 4.
Weapon balancing and slots will be there for the mods on Aug. 28, but the mods themselves along with new weapons will not be available until the following week, as the developers said they want players to “ease into things.”
In the meantime before the Forsaken launch, make sure you check out the details on everything we know about Destiny 2 Year 2 weapons, mods, and abilities that we learned from the Bungie live stream and more updates that were revealed for the Aug. 28 patch.
