Disney Is Now Pushing Avengers: Infinity War For 11 Oscar Categories

Less than Black Panther’s 16, but far more than before.

Update 11/9: Though Disney initially only listed Avengers: Infinity War for a single Oscar category on its for your consideration website, it appears that an additional 10 categories have been included for the film. As before, Disney is pushing to get Infinity War nominated in the Best Visual Effects category, but has since included the following categories:

  • Best Director
  • Best Adapted Screenplay
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup & Hairstyling
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Sound Editing
  • Best Original Score

Although Black Panther is still being campaigned for 16 nominations, it appears Disney is no longer pushing for its victories in favor of Infinity War. The original story follows.

Disney is famously pushing Black Panther this awards season, officially campaigning the film in 16 separate Oscar categories, while Avengers: Infinity War is only being campaigned in a single category.

According to the Disney Guild Awards 2018 webpage (via IndieWire), Disney is vying for awards from Black Panther, Infinity War, Incredibles II, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Mary Poppins Returns and the animated short Bao. However, it appears Black Panther is being heavily prioritized over its fellow MCU film, as where Black Panther is being positioned for award nominations like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and more, Infinity War is simply being touted as a Best Visual Effects contender (which Black Panther also has listed).

Though this move by Disney has been anticipated for quite some time, many had hoped it would attempt to champion Josh Brolin for Best Supporting Actor as Thanos, though it appears the studio is prioritizing possible wins from the Black Panther cast over this role. Still, Thanos’ status as a motion capture role would likely have held Brolin back from the nomination regardless of if Disney pursued this route.

We’ve known of Disney’s strategy to earn Black Panther a Best Picture nomination for some time, including hiring a veteran Oscar strategist backed by a significant budget.
