The Avengers: Endgame trailer starts on a grim note as we see a dying Tony Stark drifting through the cosmos in the Guardians’ ship, but we have a theory on how he might survive his predicament, and it’s centered around the love of his life, Pepper Potts.
In the comics, Pepper has her own version of the Iron Man armor equipped with protective gadgets to save people, which is why she takes up the superhero name Rescue.
If Tony is broadcasting a signal back to Earth, and Pepper presumably survived the Decimation, then it stands to reason she would be using Stark Industries’ vast technological resources to search for him among the stars. Assuming she picks up his signal, what better way to save him than by coming to the rescue (ha) in a newly crafted set of armor?
Tony’s relationship with Pepper was given the spotlight at the start of Avengers: Infinity War, and they were abruptly split apart as Tony boarded Ebony Maw’s ship into space, effectively so he could save Pepper (along with the rest of the world), so it would be fitting on an emotional level for Pepper to be the one to save Tony while he’s at his lowest point.
In the lead-up to Iron Man 3, fans were convinced that trailers were teasing Pepper donning the Rescue armor, but it turned out that Tony was only covering her in his armor to protect her from the explosive attack on his mansion. Certain fans were miffed at the misdirection, but now the door is open for a proper version of Rescue to appear in Avengers 4.
There’s a bit more information online that factors into this theory, but it should be considered a spoiler, so click away now if you don’t want to know.
Earlier this year, a photo surfaced online of Gwyneth Paltrow wearing the signature purple Rescue armor, and we’ve seen leaked photos of a Rescue action figure, so it’s a foregone conclusion that the Rescue armor is indeed in Avengers: Endgame. But the jury is still out on whether Rescue will be the one to save Tony.
There are, of course, a few other options as to who could save Tony.
Nick Fury paged Captain Marvel at the end of Infinity War, so maybe she’ll cross paths with Tony’s ship on her way back to Earth.
Another option is Valkyrie. Although she wasn’t in Infinity War, the Russos have since confirmed she escaped the Asgardian ark with half of the remaining population of Asgard before Thanos blew it up. Maybe the ark will add one more survivor to its number.
Who do you think will be Tony’s savior? Let us know in the comments.
