This week’s Spider-Man Annual #1 offered a new glimpse into the earliest days of Miles Morales’ superhero career, including the very first Spider-Man costume he ever wore.
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Spider-Man Annual #1!
This issue essentially acts as a new origin story for Miles now that the character exists in the traditional Marvel Universe rather than the Ultimate Universe. The majority of the main story takes place several years in the past, during the events of 2008’s Secret Invasion and at a time when Miles is still trying to keep his spider powers on the down-low. Miles and his friends Ganke, Brent and Olivia are busy shopping at an exclusive pop-up store when a group of Skrulls begin stirring up trouble. Miles is forced to grab a random assortment of overpriced clothing and become Spider-Man for the first time.
By comparison, Miles was shown wearing a much more Peter Parker-inspired costume during his very first mission in the Ultimate Universe.
That’s not the only big change this issue makes to Miles’ origin story. Every good Spider-person needs an Uncle Ben figure – that person whom they failed to save and whose memory motivates them to become a better hero. In the Ultimate Universe, Miles’ mother served that role. But now that she’s been resurrected as part of the Morales’ family’s migration to the Marvel Universe, Brent is taking over than thankless job.
