Sony is developing a new Marvel Comics movie based on the Spider-Man villain and antihero, Morbius the Living Vampire.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Power Rangers writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama have recently submitted a script for the movie, simply titled Morbius, to Sony after a secret development process.
The character, named Dr. Michael Morbius, was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, and first appeared in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #101. Morbius is a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease who, after attempting to cure himself, becomes afflicted with a form of vampirism.
The character has fought Spider-Man on several occasions and also became a slightly heroic character.
Story details about the movie are not known. Sharpless and Sazama also wrote Dracula Untold, and are the writers behind Netflix’s upcoming Lost in Space reboot.
Sony is in the process of launching its own Spider-Man cinematic universe separate from the MCU. A Venom movie starring Tom Hardy is currently in production and set to open in theaters on October 5, 2018.
Venom will be followed by a Black Cat/Silver Sable film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
