Ever since Scott Snyder hit his stride writing Batman, the comics community knew he was destined to eventually take over DC’s flagship superhero team, the Justice League. And now he’s doing it in grand style. Both Dark Nights: Metal and Justice League: No Justice have set the stage for this team inspired by the Justice League animated series, who are faced with new threats awakened by the crack in the Source Wall and a group of old foes led by a freshly heel-turned Lex Luthor, the Legion of Doom. Best of all, Marvel mainstay Jim Cheung has come over to the Distinguished Competition to draw the story, so it’s pretty much a given that Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and the rest will be looking better than ever.

Batman #48 – $2.99

STL082335

Writer Tom King | Artist Mikel Janin (DC Comics)

Writer Tom King and his artistic collaborators have been building an epic superhero romance for the ages between Batman and Catwoman and it’s all leading towards the big wedding between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. But not if the Joker has anything to say about it. This issue kicks off Part One of “The Best Man” storyline where Joker has caught wind of the BatCat romance and is dead set on making sure Batman doesn’t get to live happily ever. Artist Mikel Janin has made a name for himself drawing elaborate double-page spreads that show characters moving through a scene from one beat to the next, and whether it’s a complex action sequence or a tense conversation, they’re always a feast for the eyes, so we can’t wait to see what he has in store for such a momentous event.

The Unexpected #1 – $2.99

STL083565

Writer Steve Orlando | Artists Ryan Sook & Cary Nord | Cover Ryan Sook (DC Comics)

DC’s New Age of Heroes, a new line of comics focused on fresh characters and concepts, is debuting a series this week called The Unexpected. The lead is a woman named Janet who had a mysterious and dangerous device implanted in her chest to save her life, but this is no Arc Reactor. The “Conflict Engine” runs on violence, so she needs to get into a fight once every 24 hours or she will drop dead. There’s also a powerful new villain, a group of weird heroes, and a plot that is both intensely personal and big enough to envelop the multiverse, and it’s all told by some of the most unique and flavorful voices working in comics today — Ryan Sook, Cary Nord, and Steve Orlando.

Keep reading for Hulk, Power Rangers and more!
