EditYou’re Stuck With Your First Character A While
The game’s main selling point, Octopath Traveler features 8 separate characters and storylines for those characters. While you can add any of the 8 to your party later on in the game, the first one you choose to begin your journey with is locked into your party until you complete their story. This is four chapters in, which will probably take about eight hours to complete a single story – not including the time spent bouncing between other character’s story quests. Choose wisely!
Here is a description of each character, with some advice at the bottom of this section. Click on a character’s name to learn more.
Ophilia is a cleric focused on healing with spells. She has the Guide Path Action, which allows her to take NPC’s with her and then Summon them in battle.
Cyrus is a scholar focused in elemental spell attacks. His Scrutinize Path Action gleans information from NPC’s, and the Study talent reveals foes weaknesses in battle, which is very useful considering how battle works.
Tressa is a merchant with mixed talents. Her Purchase Path Action lets her buy items from NPC’s that you usually can’t purchase from. The Eye for Money talent allows you to pick up loose change left by followers while traveling.
Olberic is a warrior focused on melee combat. His Challenge Path Action lets him duel NPC’s, and his Bolster Defense talent allows you to boost while defending to protect against formidable blows.
Primrose is a dancer who has a mix set of skills, some of which focus on buffing the party. Her Allure Path Action lets her take NPC’s with her, and the Summon talent allows her to call upon those NPC’s in battle.
Alfyn is an apothecary focused on healing with items. His Inquire Path Action lets him glean information from NPC’s. The Concoct talent allows him to create potions and other substances to aid allies in battle.
Therion is a thief focused in melee. His Steal Path Action lets him take items from NPC’s, and the Pick Lock talent allows him to open locked chests.
H’annit is a hunter focused on physical attacks using the axe and bow. Her Provoke Path Action lets her duel NPC’s with her beast, and the Capture talent allows her to capture enemy beasts to be used later in battle. This makes her very flexible.
Each one begins their journey at a different location on the map before venturing into the wider world. All are viable, so read each character’s biography and choose the one most compelling to you. And remember some of the other character’s traits as well. It may compel you to decide which of them to go add to your team first.

That being said, no matter what character you choose to use at the start of Octopath Traveler, the game eases you into battles with that protagonist. Most early enemies are weak to the strengths of the corresponding character in the nearby city. This gives no character any competitive early game advantage over another, so choose whichever character’s story is most compelling to you.

After you finish the prologue for your chosen protagonist, your first steps into Ostera will be on the venture of finding teammates from the roster of the other 7 characters in the game.
Which you choose first is up to you, but even if you want to go it alone, you most likely won’t be able to continue your protagonist’s tale because…
EditYou’re Not Ready for the Second Part of Your Journey
After you finish the Prologue of any of the characters, you’ll see the status of the next location they will travel to continue their story. However, in every case, the level recommendation far exceeds your current level. It’s fairly obvious the game is leading you into adding other characters to your party.
EditJobs Are Flexible
Each character begins the game as a certain class – or Job, as they are called in Octopath Traveler A character’s job dictates what weapons they use, and what skills and abilities they bring into battle.
As you begin exploring the world after the introductions to each character, make sure to explore to find 8 shrines you can go to and learn secondary jobs that each party member can take to learn additional skills on top of their initial job. These shrines essentially let your characters take on roles usually held by one of the other 7 party members – but only one person can hold a specific secondary job at a time.
For example, H’annit has the Hunter as her primary Job. Upon finding the Shrine to learn the Dancer as a secondary Job, H’annit can become a Hunter/Dancer and use both of their abilities and weapons in battle, alongside Primrose who is also a Dancer as her primary job. However, while H’annit is using the Dancer Job, any other character cannot use Dancer as their secondary job. Luckily, secondary jobs can be swapped around whenever you are at the tavern.
There are also 4 advanced jobs found in level 50 dungeons with very hard bosses.
EditHow to Get Strategic With Combat
Octopath Traveler does a decent job at teaching you the basics of combat, but getting into the grit of it can be a bit more challenging.
While still a traditional JRPG in many ways, Octopath Traveler puts its own unique spin on everything, including combat. Become familiar with its nuances and layout for combat to gain the best strategic advantage in this system.
Those familiar with the Bravely Default games will recognize that some similar elements are here – characters gain Battle Points (BP) while attacking regularly or defending – up to a maximum of 5. On your turn, you can expend BP to not only deal more damage, but attack several times – which can be essential for breaking the guard of a foe – or unleashing even more powerful skills when that foe’s guard is broken.
An enemies guard can only be lowered with weapons they are weak to – which you can either reveal by experimenting with different attack types, or having a Scholar in your party to reveal these weaknesses
If an attack lands that lowers an enemy’s guard to 0, they will be stunned and be unable to utilize their next move, allowing you to disrupt their combat and deal more damage for the round they are stunned
