A new Star Wars series is headed to Disney+ in 2020. Just announced today, Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge is an upcoming game show aimed at transforming young Padawans into full-fledged Jedi Knights. The contestants will be tested in the “core Jedi principles of strength, knowledge, and bravery” as they complete a set of different challenges. Lucasfilm’s senior director Mickey Capoferri says, “the various challenges will test a Padawan’s connection to the Force in three locations — a forest planet, on board a Jedi star cruiser, and inside a Jedi temple — immersing them and the audience in a fun, humorous, and exciting competition.” He also describes it as “a kids game show like no other.”
Jedi Temple Challenge will be hosted by Ahmad Best, known for his portrayal of Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequels, returning this time as a Jedi Master who will mentor and guide the young contestants throughout the competition. Best is joined by Mary Holland (known for her recurring role as Shawnee in Veep) who will be playing a “hilarious humanoid droid companion.”
Being that it’s a game show, Jedi Temple Challenge will be largely unscripted, which is a big departure from the story-rich universe that Star Wars is known for. However, this new format will still carry the core values of Star Wars’ “competitive spirit, harrowing obstacles and a hero’s triumph over challenges” in a way that fans have never experienced before.
Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge is being developed by (ex-IGN Alum) Scott Bromley and Steve Blank and will be executive produced by Mickey Capoferri and Christine Beebe.
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger said the future of Star Wars is on Disney+ and the subscription service still has a host of upcoming Star Wars shows planned including a series focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Rogue One prequel series focused on Cassian Andor, and more that will undoubtedly be announced in the future. For now, fans have plenty to be excited for including The Rise of Skywalker, which will end the decades-long saga, as well as the recent Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game, which we thought was amazing.
