Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s battle royale mode, Blackout, will feature 80 players when the beta launches next week, although that number may change for launch or at some point in the future.
Speaking to Game Informer, Treyarch co-studio head Dan Bunting said that while they “they had tested internally with 100 players, the studio is putting the quality of gameplay first over hitting an arbitrary number.”
“What’s really more important to us than a number is that the gameplay experience is as refined as it can be, that’s it the ideal perfect format for what players are going to play,” Bunting explains. “So we’re starting with 80 players, but we’ve gone higher than that. Whenever we launch a game as a beta or whatever, that’s the beginning of something. We’re going to actively be participating in the community and taking feedback, making changes and adapting, evolving the game as feedback rolls in. So there’s a lot that can go on that can happen beyond that first impact of the game going out there.”
So, at least for the beta, Blackout will feature 20 less players than PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. The player count for the recently delayed Battlefield V’s battle royale mode, Firestorm, was today revealed to be 64, with 16 teams of four fighting for victory.
Game Informer has also confirmed that zombies will be in Blackout but that they “are a bit different,” and can be “both a pest and a boon to your efforts to be the best warrior on the battlefield.” The inclusion of zombies was teased in Black Ops 4’s multiplayer beta trailer back in July.
Additionally, the vehicles that will be available for the beta and launch were also revealed by Game Informer and include land, sea, and air types.
On land, players will be able to drive a Cargo Truck that hold one driver and four passengers and an ATV that supports one driver and one passenger.
On sea, the Zodiac Inflatable Boat will be available that has one pilot and one passenger.
Lastly, in the air, the Little Bird Helicopter will carry four passengers and one pilot.
The beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode will begin on PlayStation 4 on Monday, September 10. On September 14, Xbox One and PC players will then be able to try out the new battle royale mode for themselves.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be released on October 12, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. For more on Black Ops 4, check out the special editions and season pass, as well as as details on new and returning fan-favorite maps.
