FDA Approves Winlevi Topical Cream for Acne Treatment

Winlevi Acne Treatment:

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles grow with oil and dead skin cells.
Acne is most common in teens and young adults.

Symptoms vary from uninflamed blackheads to pus-filled pimples or large, tender and red bumps.
Treatments consist of over-the-counter lotions and cleanser, in addition to prescription antibiotics.

Early next year, physicians could have an intriguing fresh acne drug to add to their arsenal of treatment choices. Winlevi is a first-of-its-kind topical cream approved at the end of August by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in patients 12 decades and older. The main acne treatment is expected to be available at the inception of 2021.

“Other highly commonly used acne medications include topical antibiotics and topical retinoids, but Winlevi, also known as Clascoterone Cream 1 percent, is different since it’s the only topical medication that focuses on the androgen receptors in the skin,” says board-certified dermatologist and founder of Eternal Dermatology, Ife Rodney. “The outcome is less sebum production and oil-buildup.”

Androgens are the hormones in the human body responsible for driving sebum production and inflammation — both of which are major causes of acne.

As per a press release from Cassiopea, the pharmaceutical firm supporting the development of Winlevi, the drug’s active ingredient, clascoterone,” acts by limiting the effects of these hormones,” which consequently leads to fewer breakouts.

Back in clinical trials ran by Cassiopea, Winlevi revealed a reduction in acne lesions and was well-tolerated when applied to the skin two times per day. The most frequent side effect, which occurred in seven to 12 percent of patients, was mild erythema — aka reddening the skin.

“Like other topical acne drugs, [Winlevi] can cause dryness, redness, and irritation of the skin,” supports Rodney. “You should also be careful, do not apply it to extensive regions of the skin or for long intervals, because this might increase the danger of internal side effects, such as hormonal imbalance.”

New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Shari Marchbein tells Allure she’s excited to try their product Winlevi and insert it to her treatment armamentarium.

“I believe it will work best as an additional treatment alternative in a comprehensive routine, however, not necessarily as monotherapy,” she states.

“I also don’t feel this will substitute for well known oral medications that mediate hormones, like Spironolactone.”

It’s needless to say; this is promising news for skin-care experts and people with acne equally.
